A Good Hard Look

Jazz Ensemble Level 4

A Good Hard Look started out as an exercise in improving my writing and resulted from a close study of the track 'From Russia with Love' from the Basie Meets Bond album. I enjoyed the quirky form and of course the bones having the featured melody. I was also trying to improve my sax writing at the time and studied the style and voicing closely.

A Good Hard Look definitely follows that chart structurally and I really enjoyed writing through the process of channelling the Basie Band. How better to learn!

We play this one quite often with the Daryl McKenzie Jazz Orchestra and I always love siting back and hearing the wonderful Tony Hicks on the tenor solo - he just kills it every time! That's him of course on the recording posted here.
