Slammin Joe's
Jazz Ensemble Level 4
Slammin Joe's was originally written for the 'Australian Showband' (at the prompting of legendary trumpeter Norm Harris) which later became the Daryl McKenzie Jazz Orchestra. It was way back somewhere in the late 1990's and was one of my first ever compositions. I'll always be grateful to Norm for nagging me to write for the band as prior to that time I didn't see composition being something I could manage. It underwent many rewrites and was eventually recorded much later in 2011 with the DMJO as the title track for that album. That's the recording you hear on this page.
The original intent was to write a 'swinging' chart but with a contemporary edge. It was also great fun to have the duelling solos and I think this has been an attraction of the chart over the years given that it provides featured solo opportunities for 4 players.
