Sub Zero
Jazz Ensemble Level 4
This chart was definitely inspired by my last trip to New York. Visiting the Jazz Standard to hear the Mingus Band live and then heading to the Vanguard to hear the Vanguard Orchestra another night was liking putting pieces of a jigsaw together in my mind. You think you understand about them but then visiting the venues and hearing them live creates a completely different level of connection for you in your understanding. You leave feeling like you finally 'get it'!
The night I was at the Vanguard with my son we were booked for the 2nd set and the 1st set went overtime. Those of us waiting outside the venue eagerly queueing up to get in didn't mind particularly - except it was a 45 minute wait in minus 17 Degrees C!
When you're from good old Melbourne, Australia that is serious cold and we felt every bit of it.
So the tune inspired by and reflecting the sound of the Vanguard Orchestra is named Sub Zero for that reason.
I have a particular love of the Thad Jones chart Big Dipper and that definitely influenced the intent of this chart.
I was particularly chuffed that the great Blackburn HS Jazz Orchestra selected Sub Zero to perform on their most recent trip as a featured ensemble at the Mid West Clinic, Chicago.
The JWpepper.com site was also kind enough to give this chart it's EDITOR'S CHOICE recognition.
