The Usual Suspects
Jazz Ensemble Level 3 (Swing)
The Usual Suspects is written as a fun and engaging chart for developing ensembles, offering a great opportunity to explore the stylistic aesthetic of classic Henry Mancini writing. Think of the cool, blues-infused atmosphere of Peter Gunn or other mid-century detective themes—moody, rhythmic, and unmistakably stylish. This piece captures that same sense of intrigue and swagger while remaining accessible for younger players.

Early in my career, I had the opportunity to play with the John Hawker Big Band in Melbourne, performing charts by composers such as Henry Mancini and Billy May. I was especially inspired by the Peter Gunn music — bold, melodic, hard-swinging charts with unmistakable character.
The Usual Suspects is my tribute to that sound: a swing chart that channels the energy, groove, and cinematic flair of those classic works, reimagined for younger bands ready to take the next step stylistically and technically.
