The Stinger's Apprentice

Jazz Ensemble Level 5.          -Electric Bass feature

This chart has a very special place in my heart.

I wrote this for my son, Patch (Patrick) to play and feature as a guest artist with the Daryl McKenzie Jazz Orchestra when he was 16 years old. Truly, the emotional connection and sense of purpose when I wrote this made it an exciting project and I remember being quite driven about it at the time. Patch had a wonderful bass teacher who is a great friend of mine, Kim May and his nickname around Melbourne's scene is 'Stinger' -  hence the title of this work and 'Stinger' is the regular bassist with DMJO to this day.

Posted below also is an early version of the track that we recorded as a multi-tracked bigband. It has a slightly different opening but is faithful for the rest of the recording. The playing by the musos on it is top notch!

There have been other brave souls who've taken on the bass part for this and it has been played in France, the US and even by the Australian Army Band (who did a fantastic job too!)

*update - this work will shortly be appearing with an exciting new publisher in Australia
